Bhagavadgeeta - Adhyaya 7

Chapter #: 7
Chapter Name: Jnana Vignana Yoga ( ಜ್ಞಾನವಿಜ್ಞಾನಯೋಗ)
Total verses (slokas) in this chapter: 30
Adhyaya - 7, Jnana Vignana Yoga Chapter of Gita (here after referred as BG) - This chapter has answers for Arjuna's question - "Krishna, now that you have taught me about Karma Yoga, Karma Sanyasa, Dhyana yoga - how do i make sure I develop or do all these? How to focus my mind on you for Dhyana without disturbance when you are so vast, omnipresent, so varied. How to get to know you so that i can focus on you?". Krishna focuses now on imparting to Arjuna - How to get to know him, that he (God) is the fundamental essence of the universe and that his current form is just an earthly incarnation, his Maya. Krishna divides those who worship him into four types: the person in distress, the power-seeker, the wisdom-seeker, and the sage.

BG:
Krishna says: "Listen to me with focus Arjuna in what I say - You should have the mind attached only to me, You should believe that I'm the sole protector so that you surrender in total, and you pray me continuously. By doing this regularly, your mind focuses on me".

maNi maNidu kaimugiyo - Mankutimma

"You have contemplated on it for a long time – about the mystery of life, that which has tired and defeated the mind. After much thinking, you have finally mastered the truth (which is Brahmaswaroopa). For the outside world, you have conquered the truth. But deep inside your conscience, when you are silently meditating – you will remember the truth again and again and surrender to it.” – Mankutimma

BG:

When Arjuna asks to show one Roopa of him, by knowing which - he need not worry about others, Krishna says: "I shall now reveal unto you fully this knowledge and wisdom, knowing which nothing else remains to be known in this world"

It is said that "Education is a process of going from known to unknown, which then becomes known and you again go to unknown". But here Krishna says - once you know this there is nothing else to know. He calls that "Jnana - which is wisdom (tilivu) and Vignana - which is experience (Anubhava). When both co-exist (Jnana and Vignana) then is when you can realize his true self. You get Anubhava (an outside process) through the senses (Indriyas)... which is in plenitude and which is constantly accumulated within your mind. But to choose what is needed and discard what is not, is Jnana - which is a process of contemplating within (inside process).

"Keep your eyes open to see the beauty of the dance of that which is in your mind (Chitsatvamoorthy) and keep your eyes closed to see its pure stable nature. Once you are at ease to look both inside and outside of these two worlds, there will be peace at heart - Mankutimma"

BG:
Krishna then explains the nature of him - He says there are two groups of Prakruti, and he is both of them - the Apara and Para Prakruti.
1) Apara Prakruti - Which can be seen outside or felt by Indriyas. There are 8 Apara Prakrutis: Earth + Water + Fire + air + space + mind (Manassu) + Intellect (Buddhi) + ego (Ahankara). These are material energy components of Krishna
2) Para Prakurti - Cannot be seen or found outside. the power or source which is the cause for Apara Prakruti. This is the spiritual dimension of his enegry.

BG:

"It is lifeless object like stones, sticks and dirt where the energy is dormant. When the hidden energy is woken up, then world comes to life. Life (soul) resides in lifeless (body) objects - Mankutimma"

To understand above kagga, we need to look at example like seeds. when we keep the seeds as-is it is jada, lifeless without any change or life. But once sown into the earth and with help of water and sun - it sprouts in no time to life. life is always hidden sleeping within the lifeless seeds. But here DVG means - soul and body. Body is like a rented place to stay for soul.

BG:
Krishna explains about Maya - "My divine energy Maya, consisting of the three modes of nature, is very difficult to overcome. But those who surrender unto me cross over it easily."

Maya works in two ways :
1) To give an illusion of something to be present when there is nothing - Eg: Mirage (mrugajala : an optical illusion caused by atmospheric conditions, especially the appearance of a sheet of water in a desert or on a hot road caused by the refraction of light from the sky by heated air.)
2) To give an illusion of nothing when there is something present.

Some people declare the material energy (Apara Prakruti) to be mithyā (non-existent). They say that we perceive Maya only because we are in ignorance, but if become seated in knowledge, then Maya will cease to exist. Some Other people think Maya is mithyā (non-existent), but factually it is an energy that is engaged in the service of God. Shree Krishna says that Maya is very difficult to overcome because it is his energy. If anyone conquers Maya, it means that person has conquered God himself. Since no one can defeat God, no one can defeat Maya either. And because the mind is made from Maya, no yogi, jñānī, ascetic, or karmī can successfully control the mind merely by self-effort. Only when you surrender to god, can you overcome tempestuous ocean of Maya (illusionary impressions superimposed upon the mind).

"Sath chit aananda (Sat: truth, absolute being or existence-- that which is enduring and unchanging. Chit: consciousness, understanding and comprehension; Ananda: bliss, a state of pure happiness) is essential nature of every soul but it is often hidden behind helplessness of life. Man is like sugar cane and world mystery is crushing wheel, life on earth is extraction and purification - Mankutimma"

After all, the very world that we live in is a minuscule part of the whole universe. How can we ever decipher what the real truth is? For pure eyes, visible and invisible are same. Brahma is hiding behind veil. The one who understand that the Creator is the essence of truth and he is behind all creation may be able to understand truth as well. - Mankutimma"

BG:
Krishna says in below verse - "There are 4 categories of people who believe in him and look for him - they are: 1) Aartho - distressed (One who look for him only when they are in trouble or distress. Their devotion is only out of fear), 2) Jignasi - Curious people (They always want to test out unknowns and then accept) 3) Artharthi - seekers of worldly favors 4) Jnani - seekers of knowledge, Tatvanubhavigalu.
